Tips for Successful Pay-Per-Click Campaigns »

Promote your website without making it a full time job!

You can have the most beautifully designed and superbly functional website in the world, but not marketing it is the internet equivalent of having 10,000 glossy brochures printed and leaving them sitting on pallets at the printers.

However once you start looking into the murky world of Search Engine Marketing and Website Promotion you can get bombarded with so much (sometimes conflicting) information you end up not knowing whether you're coming or going.

Hence we have developed the Netpoint Nine Point Plan - do everything on this list and you'll be 90% of the way there, or if you haven't got time - get us to do it for you. Start with No. 1 before you've finalised the text of your website. Undertake this process just for the home page of your site to start with - you can then expand it to each of the main areas of your site, using a different set of core keywords in turn.

  1. Create a list of core keywords and phrases (maybe 10-20) that you can use on your webpages:
    • Put yourself in the place of a potential visitor to your site. What keywords/phrases would you type into a search engine?
    • Set up a Google AdWords account (or get us to do it for you and receive £25 credit in your account immediately), and use their Keywords Tool to help you expand/refine your list - you'll be able to see how many people use particular search terms each day. Alternatively think about using the Google Jumpstart program - it'll give you a good starting point to work from.
  2. Begin your site setup using these guidelines:
    • Use a domain name, folder and file names on your website that include keywords related to your products/services
    • Don't use frames or 'splash' pages
    • Avoid dynamically generated pages
    • Include a fully-linked, comprehensive site map
    • Focus pages on specific sets of keywords
    • Make sure you have intelligible site statistics available so you can measure the full effect of your efforts
    • Include a 'how did you hear of us' field in any online form that visitors may submit
  3. Build your webpages around the core keywords you have
    selected.
  4. Submit your website to the major search engines - take a look at SearchEngineWatch.com to get the full picture.
  5. Build a network of high-quality links from other websites (that themselves have a good page rank in search engines) to yours:
    • Send emails to individual sites asking for 'link-swops'
    • Ensure you are in all relevant online directories
    • Get links from Trade Association sites.
  6. Use a Pay-Per-Click (PPC) scheme such as AdWords from Google to provide focused extra visitors. Make sure you use the AdWords tracking facilities to get an accurate ROI (Return On Investment) figure.
  7. Use the Cross-Channel tracking facilities in your AdWords account to track further marketing campaigns such as:
    • Overture, FindWhat, Looksmart or Lycos Pay-Per-Click
    • Yahoo or MSN Banner ads
    • Banner ads on other sites
    • Email broadcast marketing campaign
    • Other online ads
  8. Use your content to its best advantage. If you have a website that has useful content, or you have experience in areas of current focus within your industry, consider converting your content into:
    • A 'White Paper' or 'Free Report' - put this into one of your Google AdWords campaigns
    • An informational email newsletter to send out to your emailing list (remember to include in your Google Cross-Channel campaigns)
    • An online article - submit it to various article websites to gert extra link-backs to your site
    • A press release - and send to relevant publications within your trade
  9. Have a cup of tea! Then remember to regularly check the following, making adjustments as necessary:
    • Your page rank for important keywords on each search engine
    • Your site statistics, most viewed pages, referrers etc
    • Your AdWords results
    • Your Cross-Channel campaign results
    • Your sales results!
